West Fargo<\/strong> (trfnews.i234.me<\/a>) \u2014 A reported explosion sparked a kitchen fire Saturday morning. The fire happened at an apartment building in West Fargo.<\/p>\n

Fire crews said the blaze started in a third-floor unit at 1354 6th St. E. One child was hurt and went to a local hospital. Several residents left the 36-unit building.<\/p>\n

Fast Response After Smoke Report<\/h2>\n

West Fargo Fire Chief Dan Fuller said crews were called just after 9 a.m. The first call came in as a fire alarm.<\/p>\n

The call changed to a structure fire soon after. Fuller said a resident heard a blast and smelled smoke.<\/p>\n

Firefighters arrived and saw heavy black smoke on the third floor, Fuller said. Crews sent a working fire alert and called for added help.<\/p>\n

Fire Contained in Kitchen<\/h2>\n

Fuller said the fire stayed in the apartment’s kitchen. Crews knocked it down with a water can.<\/p>\n

Firefighters also placed ladders as a safety step. They wanted quick access if flames spread.<\/p>\n

Agencies Assist Residents<\/h2>\n

Fargo Fire units responded with West Fargo crews. West Fargo Police also assisted at the scene.<\/p>\n

Support groups also responded for resident needs. Those groups included the Salvation Army<\/a> and the American Red Cross<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A drone team supported scene operations. Sanford<\/a> ambulance crews also supported the medical response.<\/p>\n

Resident Used Extinguisher<\/h2>\n

A resident used a hallway fire extinguisher before crews arrived, Fuller said. He said that the action helped limit damage.<\/p>\n

Fuller urged residents to know extinguisher locations. He also urged regular smoke alarm checks.<\/p>\n

Cause Still Under Review<\/h2>\n

Investigators are still working to find the cause. Officials have not released details about the explosion report.<\/p>\n

Repair costs were not available on Saturday. Cold weather added risk for people outside, Fuller said.<\/p>\n

Extra units were called to keep crews safe and warm. Displaced residents were offered help at the scene.<\/p>\n
