Police say the stop happened in Mahnomen early Saturday.<\/p>\n

What Happened<\/h2>\n

Court records say the stop happened on January 18, 2026, at about 1:52 a.m.<\/p>\n

An officer reported seeing a vehicle approach a stop sign too fast.<\/p>\n

The vehicle then slid through the intersection.<\/p>\n

The location was Main Street and West Jefferson Avenue in Mahnomen.<\/p>\n

The officer started a traffic stop soon after.<\/p>\n

Signs of Impairment<\/h2>\n

The driver was identified as Charles Allen Erickson, 53, of Frazee.<\/p>\n

The complaint says Erickson had watery, bloodshot eyes and slurred speech.<\/p>\n

The officer also reported a strong smell of alcohol from the vehicle.<\/p>\n

Erickson allegedly said he had not been drinking.<\/p>\n

He also claimed \u201csomething spilled\u201d inside the vehicle.<\/p>\n

Investigators say Erickson failed several field sobriety tests.<\/p>\n

Breath Test Results<\/h2>\n

A preliminary breath test reportedly showed a 0.247 alcohol level.<\/p>\n

That is about three times Minnesota\u2019s 0.08 legal limit.<\/p>\n

Erickson was arrested and taken to the Mahnomen County Sheriff\u2019s Office.<\/p>\n

A formal DMT breath test at 2:54 a.m. reportedly showed a 0.24 result.<\/p>\n

Charges Filed<\/h2>\n

The felony charge is first-degree DWI.<\/p>\n

The complaint lists it as 0.08 within two hours.<\/p>\n

The complaint cites Minnesota Statute 169A.20<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The gross misdemeanor charge is driving after cancellation.<\/p>\n

The complaint says the cancellation was a public safety risk.<\/p>\n

The complaint cites Minnesota Statute 171.24<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Authorities say his license was canceled.<\/p>\n

The cancellation was labeled \u201cinimical to public safety.\u201d<\/p>\n

Records also list a prior felony DWI conviction from 2015.<\/p>\n

The case was filed on January 20, 2026, in Mahnomen County court.<\/p>\n

Bail was set at $1,400 with conditions, according to the record.<\/p>\n
