Cook County (trfnews.i234.me)<\/a> \u2014 A chairlift at Lutsen Mountains stopped during rising winds on Saturday, Jan. 17, 2026.<\/p>\n

Riders were removed by rope in a full evacuation.<\/p>\n

The resort said the Raptor Express will stay closed for several days.<\/p>\n

Repair parts are being shipped to Lutsen, Minnesota.<\/p>\n

What happened<\/h2>\n

Lutsen Mountains said a chair became stuck while entering the top terminal.<\/p>\n

The chair turned sideways as it reached the unload area.<\/p>\n

The lift then could not move.<\/p>\n

The resort shut the lift down and started an evacuation.<\/p>\n

Lift Blog<\/a> reporter Peter Landsman said the stop led to a rope rescue.<\/p>\n

He wrote that the lift is a 2023 Leitner-Poma high-speed six-seat chairlift.<\/p>\n

He also reported that the line has 53 chairs.<\/p>\n

How riders got down<\/h2>\n

Resort staff and ski patrol moved along the lift line.<\/p>\n

A local fire department ladder truck also helped.<\/p>\n

The lift crosses roadways near the base area.<\/p>\n

That access let crews reach some chairs with a ladder.<\/p>\n

Other riders were lowered from their chairs with ropes.<\/p>\n

Lift Blog said the evacuation took several hours.<\/p>\n

Resort updates<\/h2>\n

In its Mountain Report<\/a>, Lutsen thanked guests for patience and support.<\/p>\n

The resort also thanked patrol, lift, and ops teams.<\/p>\n

On Monday, Jan. 19, the resort said Raptor Express remained closed.<\/p>\n

It said the Bridge Lift would run in its place.<\/p>\n

The resort said Bridge provides access to the same terrain.<\/p>\n

The report also warned about extreme cold and wind conditions.<\/p>\n

It said the gondola was closed due to those warnings.<\/p>\n

Injuries and unanswered questions<\/h2>\n

The resort has not announced any injuries.<\/p>\n

Landsman reported he asked the resort about injuries.<\/p>\n

As of Monday, no public update confirmed injuries or a fall.<\/p>\n
