BISMARCK, ND (trfnews.i234.me) – A Mandan woman accused of attempted murder after allegedly stabbing her neighbor with sewing shears was committed to the State Hospital on Tuesday, June 25, instead of facing a criminal trial. Sabrina Kraus was ordered committed for up to 15 years by South Central District Judge Bobbi Weiler due to her mental health disorder.
As part of the agreement, several charges, including aggravated assault and reckless endangerment, will be dismissed. Kraus will receive credit for the 416 days already spent in custody or at the State Hospital.
Kraus was deemed a danger to the community following a risk assessment. Since her arrest on May 7, 2023, she has undergone multiple mental health evaluations. State law defines criminal responsibility as understanding the consequences of one’s actions, which Kraus was found lacking.
Yearly hearings will update the court on Kraus’ status and her potential release. Defense attorney David Dusek stated that Kraus is in favor of the treatment plan for her mental health and drug-use issues.
Kraus allegedly stabbed her neighbor, Kim Huber, inside Huber’s Mandan apartment after Huber asked her to leave. Kraus reportedly attacked Huber with scissors and a piece of wood, leading Huber to defend herself unsuccessfully with a gun before locking herself in and calling 911. Huber supports Kraus’ commitment, despite the lasting physical and emotional scars.
Following the attack, Kraus had a three-hour standoff with the police before being taken into custody. No firearms were found in her apartment, but evidence of the attack, including the scissors and a blood-stained towel, was recovered.
