Wolverton: Suspect Jailed After New Year’s Shooting

Wilkin County, Minnesota (trfnews.i234.me) — One man is dead and another man is in jail after an early New Year’s Day shooting near Wolverton.

The Wilkin County Sheriff’s Office says the death happened near Wolverton shortly after midnight. Investigators say there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The call came in just after midnight

The sheriff’s office says deputies received a call around 12:45 a.m. on New Year’s Day. The call was in the 1700 block of Minnesota Highway 75 near Wolverton.

The reporting party told dispatch that someone had been shot. Responding law enforcement found a man with an apparent gunshot wound.

Paramedics arrived and tried to help. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses interviewed, suspect identified

Investigators say witnesses were interviewed at the scene. A suspect was identified during those interviews.

The suspect was later arrested, according to the sheriff’s office. The suspect was taken to the Wilkin County Detention Center.

Formal charges are pending. The sheriff’s office says that the decision will be based on the facts gathered so far.

Suspect booked into jail

The sheriff’s office has not publicly named a suspect in its statement. Jail records show a 26-year-old, Myron Allen Johanson, was booked on New Year’s Day.

Johanson was booked at 9:11 a.m., according to the booking information provided. He is being held on a pending charge of third-degree murder.

Autopsy planned, victim not yet identified

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to conduct an autopsy. Officials say the autopsy will determine the cause and manner of death.

The sheriff’s office says the victim will be identified later. That will happen after the autopsy and family notifications.

What investigators believe so far

Investigators say the suspect and victim knew each other. Officials say that is part of why they do not believe the public is at risk.

This case remains under investigation. More details may be released after charges are filed.

  1. This is what happens when you ignore your children and don’t discipline in the smallest measure. Father and grandparents are partially to blame for this tragedy, but ultimately Myron made the choice to pull the trigger. They pulled him out of Sunday school and confirmation class because we expected them to behave… I was his teacher and it crushed me. Heartbroken but not surprised of their consequences. Two men lost their lives that night.

  2. I miss the days we beat each other up over disagreements vs arming ourselves. My heart goes out to both families when someone loses their life nobody wins 😢
