Wisconsin Woman Sentenced for Theft Following Misuse of Lost Debit Card

Detroit Lakes (trfnews.i234.me)Jessica Desiree Mosgaller, 41, of Verona, Wisconsin, formerly of Lake Park, Minnesota, was sentenced in Becker County District Court after pleading guilty to gross misdemeanor theft by finding and appropriating lost property. As part of a plea agreement, a felony charge of financial transaction card fraud was dismissed.

Details of the Incident

In early September 2023, a woman reported that her husband’s debit card was lost at Jimmy John’s in Detroit Lakes. Subsequently, unauthorized charges totaling $1,195.71 appeared on their bank statement, including transactions at DL Tobacco, BP Detroit Lakes, and Masterpiece Alternative in Becker County.

Investigations revealed that Jessica Mosgaller used the lost debit card at Masterpiece Alternative, enrolling in their rewards program under her name. Surveillance footage confirmed her identity during these transactions. Mosgaller claimed her husband found the card and gave it to her, but he denied this account.

Sentencing Details

Mosgaller was sentenced to 364 days in the Becker County Jail, with the sentence stayed for two years. She is required to complete 40 hours of community service in lieu of confinement. Additionally, she was placed on two years of probation, ordered to remain law-abiding, and must repay $1,195.71 in restitution. A fine of $300 plus $150 in court fees was also imposed.
