Williams, MN Resident Facing Charges for Criminal Sexual Conduct

a Williams Minnesota man has been charged with second degree criminal sexual conduct following an incident that occurred February 14th at a residence near Williams according to the statement of probable cause of Lake of the Woods County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call just after 1:00 a.m. on February 14th reported reporting an attempted rape the caller told officers Chad Edward a Safford 35 of Williams had attempted to rape her at her home near Williams the caller said she was in the bathroom of the home when Safford came in grabbed her arms from behind and threw her to the ground Safra then allegedly attempted to have sex with her with the victim fighting and scratching him throughout the attempt the complaint graphically describes the attempt which ended when the victim fought her way free and attempted to use her smartphone watch to call 911 rip the watch off her wrist before she could complete the call the victim was eventually able to leave the residence and went to another location where she called 911 Woods County deputies Russell Platts Craig severs and nathan haines and been duly arrived at the residence but Safford would not answer the door and attempts to contact him were unsuccessful deputies remained at the scene while a search warrant was drafted and the Special Response Team compromised of officers from Lake of the Woods and Roseau counties was available United States border patrol personnel also assisted at the scene over 13 hours later Safford exited the residence without incident he later provided a statement admitting he had attempted to have sex with the victim and that she was telling him to stop throughout the incident Safford has been charged with one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct a felony that carries a maximum penalty of 25 years in prison and/or a 35 thousand dollar fine one count of interfering with the 911 is demeanor with a maximum penalty of one year in prison and/or a $3,000 fine and one misdemeanor count of domestic assault which carries a maximum penalty of 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine I’m Neil Berg reporting for page one publications calm
