Neil Berg here on lake bemidji in northern minnesota where the big question this spring is whether or not the ice will be out in time for the fishing opener on saturday may 14th so uh we’re predicting around may 10th hopefully it’ll be off but it’s about two feet right now and it’s but it’s warming up so as you can see it’s it’s melting but so you’re giving yourself about a four day leeway there yeah hopefully so what’s the deal for the opener you’re gonna have the ice off the lakes boy may 14th you know that’s only two and a half weeks away and um uh you know our local radio station had a contest you had to have your entry in by february end of february i picked may 6th and a lot of people were saying oh that’s it’s going to be out way before then i don’t it’s not going to be out by then i mean i was out scouting around this morning and i even went to a couple smaller lakes and honest to gosh on most of the lakes now this is deceiving i like bemidji because the mississippi river kind of opens up that channel but uh most of the lakes are still locked right up yet in fact it looks like i can still drive a truck out there so um we’re gonna need a lot of warm weather i think it’s going to go out the smaller lakes for sure before the opener but some of the bigger lakes maybe even bemidji but you know lakes like winnie or cass leech lake of the woods lake of the old they’re they’re going to be ice fishing maybe on the opener have you ever do you remember this ever happened before one time i wish i could remember when it was but it was probably 20 plus years ago it was the opener and a couple of kids from bsu were out here in lake bemidji in an aluminum boat 12 foot aluminum boat that they drug out on the ice drilled holes outside of the boat sat in the boat and we’re fishing ice fishing on the opener so it’s happened and it it might happen again so what’s the verdict will the ice be out in time for the may 14th fishing opener your guess is as good as anyone else’s in bemidji i’m Neil Berg reporting for trfnews.i234.me

In my life there have been two MN openers where the ice was still on the lake. I am pretty sure 1979 was one of them, but I am unclear about the other year.
I was up at our lake house a week ago its on Star Lake near Dent MN and there were a couple sloughs that had opened up but as far as any lakes there was not one lake I saw that was even very clear along the edge. Star will have ice on it for opener I am sure about that since its one of the very last for ice out every year anyway. Doesnt excite me to much since even if the ice does come off the water is going to be so cold it will still a couple weeks before things start happening.
On Monday 04/25 I checked ice on several lakes in the arrowhead,
I could have driven my 1 ton across all of them. The shorelines haven’t even started to open yet.
But… things happen quickly when spring pops.
None the less I rescheduled my week long fishing trip to May 18th.
Global warming…….
Those mid late 70s had some late ice outs .
