Becker County (trfnews.i234.me)Joseph Allen Porter Jr., 45, of White Earth, Minnesota, has been sentenced in Becker County District Court for a felony violation of a no-contact order.

While the criminal complaint was not available online, sentencing documents show that Judge Gretchen Thilmony issued the sentence on July 9, 2025, at the Becker County Courthouse in Detroit Lakes.

Sentence Details:

  • 24-month prison sentence at St. Cloud, stayed for five years (a downward departure from sentencing guidelines)

  • 40 days in Becker County Jail, with credit for 40 days served

  • Five years of supervised probation

Conditions of Probation:

  • No possession or use of firearms, ammunition, explosives, alcohol, drugs, or mood-altering chemicals, except prescribed medication

  • Must comply with any existing no-contact or protection orders

  • Required to complete a Domestic Abuse Batterer’s Intervention Program

  • Must undergo a comprehensive assessment and follow all recommendations

  • Ordered to pay $500 in fines and $160 in court fees

Reason for Downward Departure:

The court cited several reasons for reducing the sentence from the standard guidelines:

  • Porter’s amenability to probation and treatment

  • The victim’s agreement with the sentencing

  • The terms of Porter’s plea agreement

  • The less severe nature of the violation compared to typical cases under the statute

Porter will now be monitored under strict probation conditions for the next five years.
