Wealthwood Township, Aitkin County (trfnews.i234.me) — On March 15, 2025, a tragic single-vehicle crash occurred on Highway 18 near Milepost 32 in Wealthwood Township, Aitkin County. A westbound 2024 Toyota Tundra, driven by 77-year-old Leon Herbert Schefers of Ironton, MN, left the roadway to the right, went airborne off a driveway approach, and violently struck a tree. The vehicle then rolled onto its roof and came to rest in the ditch.
Sadly, Schefers was pronounced dead at the scene. Road conditions were wet at the time of the crash. Authorities are still investigating whether alcohol was a factor. Aitkin County Sheriff’s Office, Aitkin Fire, North Memorial Ambulance, and the DNR responded to the incident.
