McKenzie County, North Dakota (trfnews.i234.me) — A tank battery explosion and fire east of Watford City forced a temporary highway closure. The incident was reported late Monday night.
Explosion reported near Watford City
The explosion and fire were reported on Monday, Dec. 29, at about 11 p.m. The site is about 15 miles east of Watford City.
Select Water Solutions LLC reported the incident at the Rink SWD 2 site. The report was made to North Dakota’s Oil and Gas Division.
Produced water release reported
The report states that about 4,000 barrels of produced water were released at the location. The release was linked to the fire on Dec. 29.
Produced water is a by-product of oil and gas development. It can contain salts and other materials from underground formations.
ND Highway 23 closure and safety concerns
The North Dakota Highway Patrol said the explosion was contained to one tank. Troopers also warned of a risk of more explosions.
The risk involved the four remaining tanks at the battery, according to the patrol. Emergency responders remained on scene Tuesday morning.
The closure impacted N.D. Highway 23 from Johnson’s Corner to mile marker 13. Drivers were urged to expect delays.
Motorists were told to avoid the area if possible. Drivers were also told to follow emergency directions.

Detours posted for traffic
Authorities said traffic was rerouted in both directions. The detours were posted to move vehicles around the closure.
- Eastbound from Watford City: south on 114th Avenue NW.
- Then east on Beavercreek Road.
- Then north on 110th Avenue NW to the Johnson’s Corner roundabout.
- Westbound from Johnson’s Corner: south on 110th Avenue NW.
- Then west on Beavercreek Road.
- Then north on 114th Avenue NW back to Highway 23.
Cleanup monitoring continues
As of late Tuesday afternoon, McKenzie County officials said the highway was still closed. Officials did not give a reopening time.
State officials said an oil and gas inspector visited the site. The inspector will monitor any additional cleanup needs.
