Investigators say Beane’s mother, who was confined to an electric wheelchair or walker, died after he allegedly set fire to a room of their home with his mother locked inside.
A 35-year-old man named Scott Beane of rural Watford City, North Dakota has been charged with the murder of his mother, Lois Beane. On September 12th, 2023, members of the McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office arrived on the scene to discover Lois Beane’s dead body in the entryway of the residence. Deputies observed significant burn marks on her body and evidence of a recent fire in the enclosed mudroom, with a dining-style chair barricading the door. It was discovered later that the fire had primarily caused damage to an electric handicap assistance chair and Lois Beane’s body. Scott did not comply with verbal commands given by deputies and was ultimately able to gain compliance through physical means. He later admitted to seeing his mother on fire in the mudroom and closing the door to protect himself. The incident was ruled a homicide, and Scott has been charged with a class A felony, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
