OTTER TAIL COUNTY, Minn. (trfnews.i234.me) – A pickup truck broke through the ice on Lake Lida near a pressure ridge close to the Icehole Bar. Tri-State Diving met the owner on January 8 to recover the vehicle using specialized equipment. The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) advises individuals to check ice thickness and avoid pressure ridges. If a vehicle breaks through the ice, it may remain afloat for a few seconds to several minutes. The DNR recommends immediately rolling down windows or breaking them with a window punch, spring-loaded emergency hammer, or ice picks, as side windows offer the quickest escape route. Vehicles with front engines tend to sink at a steep angle and may land on their roofs in water 15 feet or deeper. As the vehicle sinks, water rapidly displaces remaining air, making escape more difficult. For additional ice safety information, visit the DNR website.
