Utah County (trfnews.i234.me) — Suspect Charged in Kirk Shooting

Utah County (trfnews.i234.me) — Prosecutors formally charged a 22-year-old Tyler Robinson on Tuesday in the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk. They filed aggravated murder and other counts. The county announced it will seek the death penalty if convicted.

The charges include aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm, two counts of obstruction of justice, and two counts of witness tampering. Officials also filed a notice of intent to seek the death penalty.

Authorities say the shooting happened Sept. 10 while Kirk spoke at a Utah Valley University event. Police say the suspect fired from a nearby rooftop. Kirk, 31, died at the scene.

Investigators say they found a rifle and other items tied to the scene. DNA on the rifle and on other objects matched the suspect, prosecutors said. They also cited messages they say show planning and admission.

The suspect turned himself in to authorities on Sept. 11, authorities said. Prosecutors say he admitted to family members that he committed the killing. Court filings and public statements gave those details.

The case drew national attention and public comments from political figures. Officials say they found no evidence that others helped plan the attack. Federal agents have pursued leads mentioned in court filings.

At a court appearance on Tuesday, the judge ordered the suspect held without bail. The court also set dates for future hearings and for the appointment of defense counsel. The state will move forward with pretrial filings.

This remains an active criminal case. We will report official filings and court records as they become public. Readers can view Utah court resources for capital case procedures and filings. (See Utah Courts.)
