BAYPORT, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – Two corrections officers at Stillwater prison were hospitalized after being assaulted by inmates on Saturday morning, officials reported.

The incident occurred around 11:30 a.m. on May 25, when an inmate attacked a corrections officer at a housing unit security post, according to a news release issued Sunday by the Minnesota Department of Corrections.

Another inmate and a second corrections officer intervened to stop the attack. During the altercation, a third inmate assaulted the second officer who had come to assist.

Both officers were taken to the hospital, treated for their injuries, and released. The inmates involved in the assault were transferred to Oak Park Heights, Minnesota’s maximum-security prison.

Stillwater prison was placed on lockdown status on Sunday while the incident was investigated. The Washington County Attorney’s Office will review the investigation findings to determine if felony charges will be filed against the inmates involved.

“This attack on correctional officers at the Stillwater correctional facility is another unfortunate reminder of the challenges and risks corrections staff face,” said Corrections Commissioner Paul Schnell in the news release. “We will pursue prosecution of the perpetrators of these cowardly attacks to the fullest extent of the law, and we recognize and appreciate the honorable actions of the incarcerated man who courageously intervened,” Schnell added.
