HOUSTON, TX ( – A woman, clad in a trenchcoat and armed with a long rifle, was fatally shot by law enforcement officers after allegedly opening fire at Houston’s Lakewood Church on Sunday afternoon. The incident, reported by Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, occurred in the 3700 block of the Southwest Freeway at Lakewood Church.

Joel Osteen, co-founder of Lakewood Church, revealed that the shooting took place between services, as attendees were transitioning to the Spanish service. Houston Police Chief Troy Finner detailed that the armed woman, around 30-35 years old, entered the west side of the property parking lot with a 4 or 5-year-old child. She initiated gunfire upon entry.

Off-duty officers on the scene swiftly engaged with the suspect, preventing potential further harm. After being shot, the woman reportedly threatened to have a bomb, but subsequent searches revealed no explosives. She succumbed to her injuries at the scene.

The child accompanying the woman sustained critical injuries and is being treated at Children’s Texas. Additionally, a 57-year-old man was shot in the leg or hip and is receiving medical attention.

As of now, the woman’s motivation remains unknown, and the number of shots fired is undetermined. Governor Greg Abbott expressed condolences and offered the full support of the state to bring swift justice. The two off-duty officers involved will be placed on administrative duty, and investigations into the shooting are ongoing.

Lakewood Church, one of the largest congregations in the country, founded by Joel and Delores Osteen, averages around 45,000 attendees per week.

This remains a developing story.
