Tragic Fire in Ely Claims Woman’s Life and Two Dogs

Ely, Minnesota (trfnews.i234.me)—​A devastating fire occurred late Tuesday night, April 1, 2025, in the 200 block of North 5th Avenue East, resulting in the death of a woman and two dogs.

Incident Details

Firefighters responded to the scene shortly after 11 p.m., encountering smoke and flames emanating from the two-story residence. During their search, they discovered the woman, who was subsequently transported by Ely Ambulance to Ely-Bloomenson Community Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

Response Efforts

Fire departments from Ely, Babbitt, and Morse-Fall Lake, along with Ely Police and the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Department, assisted in combating the blaze. Ely Fire Chief Dave Marshall reported that the fire was confined to the basement and first floor, with firefighters facing high heat, dense smoke, and limited visibility throughout the structure. The origin of the fire is believed to be in the basement.

Investigation

The Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s Office has been engaged to determine the cause of the fire. As of now, the identity of the deceased woman has not been released, pending notification of family members.
