Tragic End: Body of Missing Canoeist Recovered in Boundary Waters

BOUNDARY WATERS, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – The body of Jesse Melvin Haugen, a 41-year-old avid outdoorsman from Cambridge, has been recovered nearly two weeks after his canoe went over a waterfall in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, according to the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office. Haugen’s body was found on Friday during a search near Curtain Falls, between Crooked Lake and Iron Lake on the Minnesota-Ontario border.

Reis Melvin Grams, 40, of Lino Lakes is still missing. The incident occurred on May 18 when two canoes went over the falls. One canoe got into distress, and others tried to help, leading both canoes to go over the waterfall.

The search for the missing men has been ongoing, with trails, campsites, portages, and water bodies near Iron Lake closed by Superior National Forest officials. Last week, Governor Tim Walz enlisted the National Guard to assist in the search efforts, which will continue for Grams.

Haugen, known for his adventurous spirit and devotion to family and faith, was a mentor at his local church and the owner of Rock Solid Plumbing in East Bethel. His company’s Facebook page expressed determination to uphold his legacy, describing him as their biggest motivator and role model.

Kyle Sellers of Ham Lake and Erik Grams survived the fall, while Jared Lohse of Cambridge stayed back at the campsite.
