Marshall County, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – A Texas man has been charged in Marshall County District Court after allegedly swindling a Marshall County resident out of $136,000 over three separate transactions in 2023.
Arrest and Charges
Mutahir Ahmed Khan, 23, of McKinney, Texas, has been charged with felony theft. The complaint was filed on April 19, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Khan was recently apprehended during a traffic stop in Pennsylvania and made his initial court appearance in Marshall County District Court on Friday, July 19.
Details of the Scam
The case began with a February 22 call to the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office from a McKinney police officer working on a fraud case. The officer identified a potential victim as a woman from Marshall County.
According to the complaint, the woman reported that she had sent a substantial amount of money to a man in Texas, who had access to her Social Security number. The woman allegedly sent $36,000 in $100 bills hidden in book pages to Khan in two shipments on August 22, 2023, to two CVS stores in Texas.
Further Transactions
Eight days later, the woman was instructed to purchase $100,000 in gold bars online. She was told that someone would collect the gold bars from her home on September 1. Following instructions, she placed the gold bars in the back seat of a vehicle parked outside her home, which then drove away. She was unable to see the driver.
Investigation and Evidence
Khan was identified as the scammer who collected the packages from the CVS stores in Texas. A search warrant executed at Khan’s home by the McKinney Police Department uncovered evidence of the fraud. Khan admitted to collecting and delivering the packages to another individual, whose identity he refused to disclose. He claimed he was coerced and compensated to perform these tasks.
Khan admitted to obtaining about 40 packages from August to September 2023, stating he did not know their contents.
Law Enforcement Response
Sheriff Jason Boman of the Marshall County Sheriff’s Office thanked the McKinney Police Department and his deputies for their efforts in solving the case.
