Sylvester C Suda, a longtime Shoreham, NY resident died July 3, 2024, at the age of 90 in Saratoga Springs, NY.
Syl was born and raised in a Czech farm community in Veseleyville, North Dakota. He started working at age 14. He volunteered for the US army during the Korean War at age 18. He was stationed in Frankfurt, Germany for his ability to speak Czech, his first language. Through the GI bill, he earned his GED, then BS and MS degrees in applied mathematics at the University of North Dakota, and North Dakota State University. He was a specialist in measurement, applied statistics and physics.
Syl worked as a scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory for 45 years accounting for nuclear materials for USA and international safeguards.
Syl was married to the love of his life, Rullie Ann Suda, for 69 years. He is loved and remembered by his 6 children, Mark Suda (Julie), Luke Suda (Joan), Mary Suda, John Suda, Anne Mahoney (Stephen), and Jane Suda (Derek). He has 12 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He took great pride in his Czech heritage and passed that on to his family. He served on the council for the Czechoslovak Society of Arts and Sciences. He served as an extraordinary minister at St Mark’s Roman Catholic Church in Shoreham, NY.
Syl had a spirit of adventure that served him well as he traveled the world for work and fun. He loved Czech beer, ice cream and opera. His journey from working on his parents’ farm in North Dakota to advising foreign governments on how to safeguard nuclear materials, is an amazing inspiration. His spirit lives on in his family.
A prayer and visitation service will be held on August 12, 2024 at 7:00 pm at Tollefson’s Funeral Home, at 154 W 12th St, Grafton, ND, 58237 .
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on August 13, 2024 at 10:30 am at St. Luke’s Church, Veseleyville, at 14207 63rd St. NE, Grafton, ND, 58237. Burial will immediately follow in St. Luke’s Cemetery, Veseleyville, ND.
