Otter Tail County (trfnews.i234.me)A harrowing incident unfolded on April 5, 2025, leading to the arrest of 37-year-old Darin Allen Borseth from Moorhead, Minnesota. He faces multiple charges, including felony assault with a dangerous weapon, following an alleged violent encounter with his girlfriend.

Incident Overview

According to the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded to a distress call around 9:30 p.m. on April 5. A woman arrived at a residence in Henning, Minnesota, visibly distressed and seeking help. Deputies observed she had multiple injuries: welts and abrasions on her legs, abrasions on her knees, a lump on her forehead, and a swollen, painful left hand.

The woman reported that she and Borseth had been at his family’s property on Star Lake in Otter Tail County, consuming alcohol and working on the property. An argument ensued when she spoke to her husband regarding her child, which angered Borseth. Inside a fish house on the property, Borseth allegedly grabbed a large stick and began questioning her about her conversation with her husband. If dissatisfied with her answers, he would strike her with the stick, hitting her multiple times on the legs.

Concerned that neighbors might hear her cries, Borseth reportedly forced her into a car, stating he would drive her home. During the drive, he continued to hit her in the head with his hand. At one point, he turned down a gravel road and allegedly told her, “This is the road I’m going to kill you on.” Fearing for her life, the woman jumped out of the moving vehicle and ran to the nearest residence for help. Borseth attempted to block her with the car and yelled at her to get back in, but she managed to reach the residence, prompting Borseth to drive away.

Charges and Legal Proceedings

Following the incident, law enforcement located Borseth and questioned him about the events of that night. He stated that they had been checking lakes and rivers for spawning carp and admitted to an argument during which the woman jumped out of the vehicle and ran. He did not provide further details. A large stick was found in the vehicle, along with the woman’s purse.

As a result of the investigation, Darin Borseth has been charged with the following offenses:

  • Felony Assault with a Dangerous Weapon: This charge is based on the alleged use of a large stick to inflict bodily harm.

  • Felony Threats of Violence: Stemming from the alleged threat to kill the woman during the drive.

  • Gross Misdemeanor Domestic Assault: Related to the alleged physical assault on the woman.

According to the Otter Tail County Jail custody list, Borseth was booked on April 5, 2025, under the following charges:

  • 609.2242.2: Domestic Assault – Gross Misdemeanor – Subsequent Violation

  • 609.223.1: Assault in the Third Degree – Felony

Legal Context and Implications

In Minnesota, domestic assault and assault with a dangerous weapon are serious offenses with significant legal consequences. A felony conviction can lead to substantial prison time, fines, and a permanent criminal record. The inclusion of threats of violence further compounds the severity of the case.

It’s important to note that charges are based on allegations, and Borseth is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The legal process will involve court appearances where evidence will be presented, and Borseth will have the opportunity to defend himself against the charges.
