Steamboat River Township: 79-Year-Old Man’s Subaru Goes Airborne in Shocking Crash

Steamboat River Township, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – On Tuesday, April 8, 2025, at approximately 12:56 p.m., a single-vehicle accident occurred on County Road 39 near Parkway Forest Road in Steamboat River Township, Hubbard County. A 2006 Subaru Forester, driven by 79-year-old Rolf Carsten Smeby of Laporte, MN, was traveling westbound when it left the roadway, struck an approach, and became airborne.

Emergency responders from North Memorial Ambulance arrived at the scene, and Smeby was transported to Sanford Medical Center in Bemidji with non-life-threatening injuries. The road conditions were reported as dry at the time of the incident. Authorities have indicated that alcohol was not a factor in the crash.
