St. Hilaire Man Sentenced For A Felony Controlled Substance Crime

Paul Joseph Hager, 64, St. Hilaire, was sentenced for a felony charge of fifth-degree controlled substance crime. A misdemeanor charge of fourth-degree driving while impaired was dismissed.

For the drug offense, Hager was granted a five-year stay of imposition. He was ordered to serve supervised probation for five years. Hager was ordered to complete a comprehensive assessment and complete the level of treatment and aftercare recommended.

At the request of probation, he was ordered to comply with an alcohol sensor and urinalysis testing. Hager was ordered to not use or possess firearms, ammunition, or explosives for the remainder of his life unless his civil rights were restored. He was ordered to supply a DNA sample. Hager was also ordered to pay $185 in fees and fines.

The charges stemmed from a Dec. 4, 2020, traffic stop near the intersection of Highway 32 and 130th Avenue. Hager told a police officer that he was tired, so that was why he was repeatedly drifting in his lane. He had bloodshot eyes, but he denied drinking alcohol or taking any drugs. Hager failed field sobriety tests, but a preliminary breath test had a result of 0.00. He possessed a glass pipe with methamphetamine residue. Inside his vehicle, law enforcement found a cooler containing three bags of drugs, including 4.4 grams of meth, 1.6 grams, and 0.5 grams. The complaint didn’t list whether the latter two amounts were meth or another drug. A search warrant was executed for his blood/urine.
