Kootenai County (trfnews.i234.me) – A firefighting mission turned into a deadly warzone Sunday afternoon on Canfield Mountain, just north of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, as firefighters were ambushed by sniper fire, leaving at least two dead in what the governor called a “heinous” assault.
According to the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, gunfire erupted around 2:00 p.m., just 30 minutes after fire crews arrived at the scene. Sheriff Bob Norris confirmed they were “actively taking sniper fire” and said the shooter, believed to be using a high-powered rifle, remained concealed in the rugged terrain.
Governor Brad Little condemned the incident as a “direct assault on our brave firefighters” and urged prayers for the victims and their families. Deputies returned fire, but the situation remains volatile, with unknown casualties and suspects.
The FBI has joined local law enforcement with tactical support. Authorities have evacuated Canfield Mountain, a popular recreational area, and warned the public to avoid the vicinity.
The fire itself is still burning—unattended—as the danger of sniper fire prevents further suppression efforts.
