Pine County (trfnews.i234.me)—A severe snowstorm wreaked havoc on Pine County roads, leading to an alarming number of traffic incidents. The Minnesota State Patrol reported a staggering 175 property damage crashes, 239 vehicles veering off the road, 23 injury crashes, and six jackknifed semis between midnight and 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
Tragically, one of these incidents proved fatal. A driver lost control on the icy roads and collided with a semi-truck on Highway 48 near Hinckley. The Minnesota State Patrol confirmed the driver was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The treacherous road conditions were a direct result of the heavy snowfall that blanketed the region. Transportation officials reported numerous accidents across the state, particularly on major highways such as I-94 and Highway 169.
In response to the hazardous conditions, the Minnesota Department of Transportation advised against travel in several areas, especially in western and central Minnesota, where roads were completely covered with snow.
Authorities are urging drivers to exercise extreme caution, reduce speeds, and ensure seatbelts are worn at all times. The combination of icy roads and reduced visibility significantly increases the risk of accidents.
As the snowstorm continues to impact the region, residents are advised to stay updated on weather forecasts and road conditions. Limiting travel to essential trips only can help reduce the risk of accidents and ensure safety for all.
