Shocking Clay County Crash: 21-Year-Old Driver Faces Charges After High-Speed Rollover Injures Four

Clay County (trfnews.i234.me)—In the early hours of March 16, 2025, a devastating accident occurred near 2nd Street North and 80th Avenue North, just north of Moorhead. Deputies from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office responded at approximately 2:41 a.m. to find a severely damaged Ford Fusion about 25 yards off the roadway.

Investigations revealed that the vehicle had been traveling at high speeds through a field before striking a ditch, becoming airborne, and overturning multiple times. The driver, identified as 21-year-old Logan Robert Herold of Pierz, admitted to consuming Busch Light beer earlier that evening at a gathering with friends. Open beer cans were observed in the vehicle, and deputies noted Herold’s slurred speech and the strong odor of alcohol. His blood alcohol concentration was measured at 0.119, exceeding Minnesota’s legal limit of 0.08.

Emergency responders found five occupants inside the vehicle. A 23-year-old male passenger from Britton, South Dakota, suffered severe head trauma, including a skull fracture, and was airlifted to the hospital. Nearly two weeks after the crash, he remained heavily sedated with injuries described as primarily “from the neck up.” Another passenger sustained neck fractures requiring a brace for several months, while two others suffered facial lacerations and bruises. All occupants confirmed they had been drinking before the incident.

Herold faces two counts of felony criminal vehicular operation resulting in great bodily harm, two counts of gross misdemeanor criminal vehicular operation resulting in bodily harm, and a misdemeanor charge for driving while impaired. He was charged through a summons and is scheduled to appear in court later this month. A booking photo was not immediately available.

Did you know? According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), approximately 28 people in the United States die every day in drunk-driving crashes—that’s one person every 52 minutes.
