Beltrami County (trfnews.i234.me) — A Shevlin man now faces two gross misdemeanor charges in Beltrami County. The charges followed a traffic stop on March 7, 2026, according to a criminal complaint.

Court records identify the defendant as William Grover Masterson, 32, of Shevlin. Prosecutors charged Masterson with carrying or possessing a pistol in a public place without a permit and third-degree DWI for refusing a chemical test required by a search warrant.

What the complaint says

The complaint says a deputy stopped Masterson at about 4:15 p.m. on Highway 2. The stop began after the driver was seen holding a cellphone in front of his face, according to the filing.

Authorities said Masterson had active warrants at the time of the stop. The complaint also says the deputy saw signs of recent drug use. Those signs included rapid speech, glassy eyes, and an elevated mood.

According to the complaint, Masterson told law enforcement there was a pistol between the seats in the vehicle. The complaint says officers then secured a 9mm pistol from the vehicle. Dispatch later confirmed he did not have a permit to carry, the filing states.

The complaint also says Masterson admitted using methamphetamine the day before. The filing says he refused field sobriety tests.

Search warrant refusal charge

The complaint says a deputy then obtained a search warrant for a blood or urine sample. Investigators told Masterson that refusing the test was a crime, the filing states. Even so, the complaint says he refused to give a blood or urine sample.

Masterson remains accused, not convicted. The charges are allegations based on the complaint. A judge will decide the case in court.
