Hubbard County (trfnews.i234.me) A Shevlin man faces charges after a Highway 2 stop, court papers say.

What happened

Garrett Lee Racette, 39, of Shevlin, is charged in Hubbard County District Court. The court is in Minnesota’s Ninth Judicial District.

Prosecutors list file number 26CR01073. The court file is 29-CR-26-158.

The complaint says a sheriff’s deputy stopped a silver GMC Sierra at 3:53 p.m. on Feb. 23, 2026. The stop was near U.S. Highway 2 and Beltrami Line Road.

The deputy said the Alaska plate was partly blocked. The registration had expired, the complaint says.

Court papers say the driver was Steven Christopher Mapes, 36. The passengers were David Newago Sr. and Racette.

The complaint says Mapes was arrested on suspicion of DWI. Deputies then searched the truck, the filing states.

Items found in a backpack

Racette said a purple backpack near his feet was his, court papers say. The deputy searched the bag, according to the complaint.

Inside, the deputy found a 9mm semi-automatic pistol, the complaint states. The pistol had a threaded barrel, the filing says.

The deputy also found a black metal suppressor in the backpack. The complaint says it fits the pistol’s barrel.

Court papers say the suppressor had internal baffles. The filing says that it worked.

The deputy also found a small yellow baggie, the complaint says. It held a crystal-like substance.

The substance field-tested positive for methamphetamine, court papers state.

The complaint says Racette said he forgot about the pistol. The filing also says he claimed it was not his.

Charges and possible penalties

  • Felony: Possessing a suppressor not lawfully possessed under federal law.
  • Felony: Fifth-degree possession of methamphetamine.
