I was taught that you drive with your accelerator, not your brakes – meaning, of course, that you drive at a careful speed, accelerating and DECELERATING due to conditions, and don't depend on slamming on your brakes to avoid a crash. I was also taught that you know where all cars are around you at all times when in traffic. Apparently, those things were not in play last night!
