Senate GOP Blocks Bipartisan Border Bill: Minnesota Senators Support, North Dakota Senators Oppose

WASHINGTON D.C. (trfnews.i234.me) – Another vote forced by Senate Democrats on border security legislation failed on Thursday. Minnesota Senators Klobuchar and Smith voted to move it forward, while North Dakota’s Republican Senators Cramer and Hoeven voted to kill it.

By a vote of 50 to 43, Republicans led the charge to halt consideration of the border security bill. North Dakota Senators Kevin Cramer and John Hoeven voted against it, while Minnesota Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith supported moving it forward. Despite widespread agreement on the importance of border security, a bill that could address some of the issues remains stalled.

Democratic Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut explained the painstaking bipartisan negotiation process. The compromise, begun at Senate Republicans’ request, involved months of negotiations with appointed representatives. However, almost every Senate Republican opposed the bill within 24 hours of its completion, allegedly influenced by former President Trump.

The bipartisan bill included reforms to ensure that individuals with violent histories would be screened at the border. Under current law, such histories only become relevant during asylum hearings. The bill aimed to improve security by addressing this issue at the border, making the U.S. safer. Despite these potential improvements, the bill failed to advance.

  1. There's so much junk packed along with this bill it's disgusting. If all these democrats, who all of the sudden want to fix the border because it's an election year, would've just continued what Trump was doing, the wall would be built, illegal aliens would be getting deported, and our citizens would be safer.
