Reduced to 10, NDSU Soccer Tops UND 2-1

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota State soccer overcame a red card in the 20th minute to defeat host North Dakota 2-1 on Sunday at Bronson Field.
 
Gabrielle Garrett put the Bison in front just 54 seconds in as she scored on the first shot of the game with a one-touch shot from a cross by Hannah Arnold that sailed into the top right corner.
 
North Dakota would answer back, as Milan Cordone scored unassisted in the eighth minute to tie the game at 1-1.
 
The Bison would be reduced a player in the 21st minute, as Ellie Sanchez was sent off with a straight red card for a fall in the penalty area. North Dakota would miss the ensuing penalty to keep the game level.
 
NDSU would outshoot the Fighting Hawks 3-2 over the remainder of the half. Payton Mulberry made a key diving save to stop a free kick that left the game at 1-1 headed into the half.
 
Less than seven minutes into the second half, Morgan Russmann put the Bison back in front as she fired a shot into the top left corner from the top of the box.
 
Mulberry stopped the only shot on target she faced in the second half to secure the victory for NDSU. Mulberry finished with three saves overall.
 
North Dakota State will open up the home portion of the Summit League schedule on Thursday, as the Bison welcome in Oral Roberts. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Dacotah Field.
