Beltrami County, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – A Redby man is behind bars after swerving into oncoming traffic and blowing a massive .325 BAC, more than four times the legal limit, during a traffic stop in Beltrami County.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, on June 29, 2025, Trooper Sasha Schmidt was driving south on Highway 89 when she was nearly hit head-on by a northbound vehicle that crossed into her lane. After evading the crash, Trooper Schmidt pulled the vehicle over and identified the driver as Barry James Oakgrove, 52.

Oakgrove reeked of alcohol, slurred his speech, and had open alcohol containers in his vehicle. Field sobriety tests revealed visible signs of impairment, and a preliminary breath test measured his BAC at 0.325. A later test at the jail registered .25.

Oakgrove’s license had been canceled as inimical to public safety, and he has prior DWI convictions from 2015 and 2019, as well as a felony fleeing conviction from 2010.

He now faces:

  • 2nd Degree DWI – BAC .16+ within 2 hours (Gross Misdemeanor)

  • Driving After Cancellation – IPS (Gross Misdemeanor)
