A Red Lake man has been charged in Pennington County District Court after he allegedly solicited a Thief River Falls police officer posing as a 15-year-old girl.

Merwin James Hill, 50, has been charged with felony electronic solicitation of a minor. He was arrested.

The charge stemmed from Facebook messages going back to Thursday, Oct. 21, according to the complaint. Hill allegedly contacted the “girl” and exchanged messages until Thursday, Nov. 11. In one conversation, they revealed their ages as 15 and 50. On multiple occasions, he made the conversation sexual in nature and asked her to meet him. Hill asked for pictures multiple times. The officer provided one nonsexual picture.

Hill sent multiple pictures, but none were sexual in nature. The first sexual conversation occurred on Oct. 28 when Hill allegedly asked the “girl” to make out with him. He admitted that he could go to prison for being involved with her. Days later, on Nov. 4, Hill allegedly talked about the size of his penis and asked if he could engage in oral sex with her.

The following day, he again asked her about engaging in oral sex. On Nov. 8, Hill asked the “girl” about her breast size and he wrote that he wished he could touch her genitals. However, he admitted he was scared he would get caught, but he soon asked if she would engage in sexual intercourse with him.

On Nov. 10, Hill began asking whether he could meet the “girl.” They agreed to meet the following day at Northdale Oil Square. He was driving a Seven Clans Casino bus at the time since he was working. Hill never entered the building despite being asked to go inside. Later, he told police that he was late, so he asked her to instead go to McDonald’s with him. Shortly after Hill left the parking lot, law enforcement initiated a traffic stop on the bus.

Hill allegedly said the conversations turned sexual because the “girl” brought up masturbation. When told that law enforcement could look up the conversation, he said he was unsure who started the sexual conversations. Hill admitted asking the “girl” to engage in sex. He noted he knew it was wrong. Hill allegedly said he wanted to get food with the “girl” and possibly have sex with her. He said he had no other conversations with people under age 18.

His personal and work cell phones were confiscated. Police planned to obtain search warrants for the phones.
