On the afternoon of 03/25/21, a Red Lake County deputy investigated a suspicious vehicle they observed parked in a vacant farmyard in Gervais Township northeast of Red Lake Falls. The deputy discovered three adults and one small child were at that location. One of the adults was a male, Wayde Richard Stallmo (55) of East Grand Forks, the other two were females, Melissa Marie Pederson (40) of East Grand Forks and Madison Lynn Bouvette (22) of Grand Forks. All of the individuals admitted they did not know the owner of the property, nor did they have permission to be at that property. When the parties were searched, marijuana was found in the possession of both females, but it did not appear that anything had been stolen or disturbed at the farmyard. Mr. Stallmo was cited for misdemeanor trespassing. Ms. Pederson was cited for misdemeanor trespassing, possession of a small amount of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Ms. Bouvette was cited for trespassing and possession of a small amount of marijuana. All three parties were allowed to leave the scene and they were told not to return without the owner’s permission. It is quite apparent that more serious crimes were likely prevented by the deputy’s keen observations that afternoon.

On the afternoon of 03/26/21, the Red Lake County Sheriff’s Office received a call from Enbridge Pipeline about a man driving a vehicle on the pipeline right-of-way and then getting stuck in the ditch, just east of Oklee, along CR. #22. While the deputy was responding to the call, the reporter called back and claimed the man exited his car and walked toward Oklee. When the deputy arrived on the scene, pipeline employees claimed that they observed the suspect drive past them again, but this time he was in an older blue pickup. After searching the area, the deputy finally located the suspect in Chester Township, Polk County. The suspect was identified as Benjamin Gerald Owen (38) of Thief River Falls. It was also discovered that the pickup that Mr. Owen was driving, had been taken from an Oklee residence, without the owner’s permission. Mr. Owen was arrested, taken to the jail in Crookston, and was booked for felony motor vehicle theft. His car was pulled out of the ditch and towed from the scene. The stolen pickup was returned to its rightful owner. Details about the possible pipeline right-of-way trespass have been forwarded to Polk County Sheriff’s Office investigators and that aspect of the case is still under investigation. Mr. Owen appeared in Court in Crookston on 03/30/21. He posted a $500 cash bond and was released from custody. He will appear in Court in Red Lake Falls sometime later this month.
