FARGO, ND (trfnews.i234.me)—In an emotional courtroom on Monday, Jan. 27, Randall Duffy, 62, pleaded guilty to the murder of Jody Campbell, a beloved Fargo server, in a case that has shaken the local community. Family and friends of Campbell filled the front rows of the courtroom as Duffy admitted to both felony murder and domestic abuse charges.
The tragic events unfolded on June 8, 2024, when Campbell, 59, was found deceased in an apartment located in the 3100 block of 33rd Street South. According to the criminal complaint, Duffy called 911 shortly before noon and confessed to choking Campbell, stating he had “choked her out too long.” He later admitted to investigators that he placed Campbell in a headlock until she went limp and fell to the floor.
A Beloved Community Member
Campbell, a server at Blackbird Woodfire Pizza in downtown Fargo, was cherished by her friends, co-workers, and customers. Her death has left a lasting impact on the community, especially as details emerged of her attempts to escape a tumultuous and abusive relationship with Duffy. Police reports and accounts from those close to her document years of abuse leading up to her death.
Court Proceedings
During Monday’s hearing, Judge Nicholas Chase revoked Duffy’s bail and ordered a probation report to review Duffy’s criminal history and background before sentencing. Prosecutors requested an extended sentencing hearing to allow time for multiple victim impact statements from Campbell’s family, friends, and co-workers. The sentencing is expected to take place in approximately 90 days.
The guilty plea brings a measure of closure to the case but underscores the lasting harm caused by domestic abuse. Authorities and community advocates continue to raise awareness about the importance of supporting victims and preventing domestic violence.
