Polk County (https://trfnews.i234.me) – A 34-year-old East Grand Forks man is facing serious gross misdemeanor domestic assault charges in Polk County after allegedly attacking the mother of his children on two separate occasions, while a child witnessed the violence.

According to a complaint filed in the 9th Judicial District, Juan Luis Virgil, born November 27, 1990, is accused of assaulting A.Y.B., a woman identified as a household member and mother of his children, on May 24 and again on May 31, 2025. Police responded to a domestic disturbance outside a home on 2nd Ave. NW in East Grand Forks, where neighbors reported a violent altercation.

During the May 31 incident, Virgil allegedly threw a Wi-Fi box, pounded his fist on the victim’s arm, and pushed her to the ground while berating Child 1, a minor with autism. The child told police Virgil yelled slurs, pointed at her, and hit her mother in the chest, stomach, hands, and legs, while also kicking her in the legs.

The victim told police she had visible bruises from a previous attack a week earlier on May 24. Officers documented bruising on her upper arm, elbow, and breasts, consistent with being slapped, yanked, and pulled down stairs. Virgil allegedly tried to blame the injuries on the victim “falling on spaghetti.”

Court records show Virgil has a prior conviction for Domestic Violence–Bodily Injury in Grand Forks County just earlier this year—February 5, 2025—for a separate offense committed in July 2024.

Virgil was arrested and is currently being held in custody. He faces two counts of:

  • Gross Misdemeanor Domestic Assault, punishable by up to 364 days in jail and a $3,000 fine per count.
