Police in Crookston fatally shoot man wielding hatchet

CROOKSTON, MN (trfnews.i234.me) – In the early hours of Thursday, May 16, a man died after approaching Crookston police with a hatchet, according to authorities.

Police encountered the man wielding a hatchet around 12:53 a.m. near East Seventh Street. Despite attempts at initial contact, the man swiftly advanced toward the officers, prompting them to utilize “less lethal” methods.

Even after these measures, the man persisted in his advance, leading officers to discharge their firearms, as reported by the Crookston Police Department.

Following the altercation, officers administered emergency medical care to the man. However, despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries after being transported to the hospital.

Authorities emphasized that this is an isolated incident, reassuring the public of no immediate safety concerns.

Following the shooting, a section of North Broadway near the Polk County Government Center was cordoned off for investigation. Assistance was provided by the Minnesota State Patrol, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, and Crookston Area Ambulance, with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension joining the scene around 6:45 a.m.
