Otter Tail County, MN (trfnews.i234.me)—On July 10, 2023, law enforcement responded to a residence on River Road in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota, following reports of an unresponsive child. Upon arrival, officers found a 3-year-old girl without a pulse. The child’s mother, identified as 27-year-old Suad Mohamed Ali, was present at the scene. Ali allegedly admitted to suffocating her daughter due to continuous crying. The child was transported to Essentia St. Mary’s Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.
Legal Proceedings
Ali was subsequently charged in Otter Tail County District Court with:
- Second-degree murder, defined under Minnesota Statute 609.19 as causing the death of a human being with intent, but without premeditation.
- Third-degree murder, as per Minnesota Statute 609.195(a), involving causing the death of a person by perpetrating an act eminently dangerous to others and evincing a depraved mind, without regard for human life.
- Fifth-degree assault, under Minnesota Statute 609.224.1(2), which pertains to intentionally inflicting or attempting to inflict bodily harm upon another.
Subsequent Incident
While in custody at the Otter Tail County Detention Facility, Ali was involved in an altercation on July 21, 2024. She reportedly engaged in a physical confrontation with another inmate, leading to an additional charge of fifth-degree assault.
Current Status
As of January 5, 2025, Ali remains in custody, awaiting trial for the aforementioned charges. The legal proceedings are ongoing, with court dates scheduled in Otter Tail County District Court.
