Former North Dakota State NCAA champion thrower Payton Otterdahl will attempt to earn his second trip to the Olympic Games, competing this Friday and Saturday at the U.S. Olympic Trials at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Otterdahl enters the meet ranked third in the U.S. and fourth in the world this year for the shot put.
He will be competing for the USA national title and a spot on Team USA at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, France. The top three finishers in the shot put at the U.S. Olympic Trials will advance to the Olympics.
The shot put competition consists of the preliminary qualifying round on Friday, June 21, at 8:15 p.m. CT / 6:15 p.m. PT, and the finals on Saturday, June 22, at 8:40 p.m. CT / 6:40 p.m. PT. Saturday’s finals feature live broadcast coverage on NBC.
Otterdahl finished 10th in the shot put at the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021 before placing fifth at the World Championships in 2023. He competed for NDSU from 2015-19, setting the collegiate indoor shot put record and winning NCAA indoor titles in the shot put and weight throw in 2019.
