Oklee, MN – Red Lake County (trfnews.i234.me) – A 35-year-old Oklee man is facing felony assault charges after allegedly repeatedly punching a neighbor in the face, causing multiple fractures, and prompting a major law enforcement response and evacuation of an apartment building.
Shawn Alvin Lossing has been charged in Red Lake County District Court with felony third-degree assault – substantial bodily harm following a violent altercation on Thursday evening, July 11.
The Assault:
At approximately 6:09 p.m., deputies responded to a reported assault at 609 Governor Dr., an apartment complex in Oklee. Upon arrival, a deputy found the victim kneeling in the parking lot, bleeding heavily from the nose with severe swelling to both eyes and a sunken left cheek.
The victim told deputies that Lossing, his upstairs neighbor, attacked him without provocation while he was smoking outside. The assault continued until the man fled to his brother’s apartment. Lossing allegedly followed him, apologized multiple times, and then returned to his own unit. A blood trail was observed by officers.
The victim was later admitted to Essentia Hospital in Fosston.
Tactical Response & Standoff:
Due to Lossing’s known violent history, deputies requested backup:
-
3 Red Lake County deputies
-
3 Minnesota State Patrol troopers
Nearby tenants were evacuated to the Oklee Fire Hall as a precaution. Authorities attempted to make contact, but Lossing stopped communicating with them.
A search warrant was secured, and a drone and surveillance robot were deployed to look inside Lossing’s third-floor apartment. However, cardboard-covered windows and blinds limited visibility.
After a final warning, Lossing opened the door and surrendered, saying, “Don’t shoot me.”
Search and Evidence:
During the search of the apartment, officers recovered:
-
Two T-shirts and a towel with suspected blood
-
Four blood swabs from the apartment walls
-
A blood swab from the sidewalk near the entrance
Lossing claimed he found the victim already injured and carried him to his brother’s apartment, then fled when the man allegedly chased him. Investigators say his version of events did not plausibly explain the extent of the victim’s injuries.
Lossing also reportedly told deputies he delayed surrendering because he wanted to ensure law enforcement were “following SOP” (standard operating procedure).
Shawn Alvin Lossing remains in custody pending further court proceedings.
