Obituary | Marlin Mattson of Newfolden, Minnesota

Marlin Mattson, 70, of Newfolden, MN passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 10, 2024 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN with his loving family by his side.

Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM with a 6:30 PM prayer service on Thursday October 17, 2024 at Obit in Thief River Falls, MN.

Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM with the service to celebrate Marlin’s life at 11:00 AM on Friday, October 18, 2024 at Evangelical Free Church in Newfolden, MN with Pastor Gary Barrett officiating. Burial will follow at Folden Cemetery, rural Newfolden, MN.

Marlin James Mattson was born September 24, 1954 in Thief River Falls, MN the son of Melvin and Avis (Bakke) Mattson. He was confirmed at the Evangelical Free Church in Newfolden. Marlin attended Marshall County Central High School graduating with the class of 1972.

After graduation, Marlin worked at Arctic Cat in Thief River Falls before earning his CDL and beginning his truck driving career.

While a patient at Northwestern Hospital in Thief River Falls in the early 1980’s, Marlin met a beautiful nurse’s aide, Susan Hovde, who became the love of his life. The couple were married on June 23, 1984 at the Evangelical Free Church in Newfolden and they settled in a home east of Newfolden where they raised their son, Matthew.

Through his years as an over the road truck driver, Marlin traveled over one million miles through all the continental United States. He loved the open road and all of the scenery that the United States has to offer.  In addition to truck driving, Marlin was an entrepreneur of many things. Along with his sister, Bev, they purchased a microscope repair business, Midwest Microscope Service, which they operated for several years. With his knowledge of heavy machinery, Marlin ran a backhoe service and pumped septic tanks. In 2003, Marlin started Matt’s Sewer Blankets which he produced and sold throughout North America.

Marlin loved to visit with people, he made friends anywhere he went. He was a tradesman, enjoyed collecting, and was always working on something in the shop. Marlin and Sue enjoyed following their son, Matt, in his sporting activities and throughout the years they have been avid Minnesota sports fans.

Survivors include his loving wife of 40 years, Sue of Newfolden, MN; son, Matthew (Amanda) Mattson of Newfolden, MN; granddaughter, Scarlett; siblings, Helen Flodstrom of Swift Falls, MN, Beverly (Bruce) Stromstad of Crookston, MN, Marti (Rodney) Benson of Benson, MN, LaVonne (Roger) Schmitz of Newfolden, MN; uncle, Lester Bakke of Arizona; brothers & sisters-in-law, Mary Hovde-McKay of Baudette, MN, Patty (Tony) Beckel of Baudette, MN, Ann (Howard) Goethe of Thief River Falls, MN, Jeff (Jennifer) Hovde of Fargo, ND, and Michael (Dale) Hovde of Baudette, MN; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
