Joan Koestner, 83, of Thief River Falls, MN, passed away on Thursday, May 25, 2023, at Thief River Care Center, Thief River Falls, MN.
The gathering time to celebrate Joan’s life will be held from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM with a 6:00 PM Prayer Service on Wednesday, May 31, 2023, at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, MN with Father Rick Lambert presiding. Burial will follow at St. Bernard’s Cemetery in Thief River Falls, MN.
Joan was born August 17, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois to Anthony and Marie (Hannon) Kennedy. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. She attended St. Symphorosa Elementary School and Lindbloom High School where she graduated with the class of 1957.
On July 25, 1959, Joan was united in marriage to Joseph Koestner at St. Symphorosa Catholic Church. They made their home in Chicago and to this union, four children were born, Richard, Robert, Rose, and Ronald. She enjoyed her time as a stay-at-home mother and also was the primary caregiver for her mother and grandmother.
Joan moved to Viking, MN in 1974 where she raised her children as a single mother.
Joan worked as a Nursing Assistant at Oakland Park Nursing Home for many years and also worked part-time as a custodian at Digi-Key.
She enjoyed Hallmark movies, reading, crossword puzzles, listening to Daniel O’Donnell, traveling to her grandchildren’s events, and telling stories about family.
Survivors include her children, Richard (Ida) Koestner of Pennock, MN, Robert (Deanne) Koestner of Thief River Falls, MN, Rose (Dennis) Srnsky of Thief River Falls, MN; grandchildren, Kerry (Amber) Koestner, Steven Koestner, Megan Koestner, Samantha (Timothy) Netland, Zachary Koestner; great-grandchild, Luna; several aunts, uncles and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her son, Ronald in 1982; and her parents.
