Donald J. Johnson, 94, of East Grand Forks, MN passed away Saturday, August 6, 2022, at Valley Senior Living on 42nd-Woodsde Village in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Donald James Johnson was born July 29, 1928, to Harvey and Barbara (Holy) Johnson on a farm near Euclid, Minnesota.  He was the youngest of five children.  He married Carolyn Jean Kulla on January 24, 1959.  Donald and Carolyn had three children, Tom (Shelley) Johnson, Cindy (Mark) Rice, and Cherie (Dean) Stoltman.  Donald also has five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.   Carolyn passed away in 1996 after 37 years of marriage.

Donald married Betty Zwingel on February 28, 2004, in Rugby, North Dakota.  Betty passed away in 2012, after eight years of marriage.

Donald attended a one-room country schoolhouse until the 8th grade, at which time he left to work on the family farm.  He moved to East Grand Forks, Minnesota in 1959 when he married Carolyn.  He continued farming until 1972.  Donald enjoyed welding in his machine shop and working with wrought iron.  He was known locally for his iron Eiffel Tower in front of his East Grand Forks home.  Between the years of 1959 – 1987, he built ten homes in the East Grand Forks area.  Donald was a member of the Eagles Club for many years, where he and Carolyn enjoyed dancing.

Donald was preceded in death by his wife, Carolyn; his second wife, Betty; his parents; one brother and three sisters.

Memorial Liturgy and Gathering of Friends and Family: 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 12, 2022, in the Historic Norman Funeral Home Chapel, 2950 South Washington Street Grand Forks, ND 58201.
Family Greeting:  One hour prior to the liturgy in the funeral home on Friday.
Interment:  Resurrection Cemetery, East Grand Forks, MN.
