Darryl Mathson, 83 of Oklee, MN passed away on Saturday, July 9, 2022 at his residence.
The funeral service to celebrate Darryl’s life will be held 11:00 AM on Friday, July 15, 2022 at Salem Lutheran Church near Oklee, MN with Rev. Linda Molitor officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Salem Cemetery.
Darryl Glenn Mathson was born February 25, 1939 in Thief River Falls, MN the son of John Raymond and Gertie (Langie) Mathson. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church near Oklee, MN. Darryl attended school in Oklee and graduated with the class of 1957.
Following high school, Darryl moved to Milwaukee, WI where he worked for Appleton Electric for a short time before moving to Hingham, MT where he worked as a ranch hand. In 1958 he returned to Oklee and went to work for Cargill Elevator in Crookston, MN unloading box cars.
On September 28, 1958, Darryl was united in marriage to Arlene Vad at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, MN. The couple moved to Milwaukee he went to work for American Motors. The family later moved to Minneapolis, MN where Darryl worked for Ford Motor Company in St. Paul. Eventually they moved to Forest Lake, MN where he bought a little resort and then settled in Oklee where Darryl sold Farmers Insurance, Mid-America Insurance and sold Marvel Brute Buildings. In 1987, Darryl started trucking and worked for three companies: Consolidated Transportation, North Star, and Transport America. He also helped farm the Mathson Family Farm. He retired in 2008 for health reasons after logging well over a million accident-free miles. After his family, trucking was the love of Darryl’s life!
After retirement he kept working as a day-trader until the day he died. Darryl was very ingenuitive, had a great memory, enjoyed telling stories about his life to the smallest detail. He loved music, cars, dogs, tractors, going to the casino and old movie stars. He was a veracious reader; his heart was broken over his son’s death in November 2021. He would take care of Brutus (Guy’s dog) until his last day.
In his younger years he liked to hunt rabbits and partridge, participated in neighborhood ballgames, played high school football, and starred as Bruno in a high school play, “Rebel Without a Cause”. Darryl would often talk about their smart horse “Beauty”.
Darryl was a life-long member of Salem Lutheran Church near Oklee, MN.
Survivors include his loving daughter, Cindy (Mark) Nelson of Erskine, MN; grandchildren, Amy (Chad) Sperling of Grand Forks, ND, Travis (Shannon) Nelson of Thief River Falls, MN, Krista (Andrew) Johnstad of Beltrami, MN, Brent, Kasie, & Bailey Mathson all of Clearbrook, MN; great-grandchildren, Chasity, Malea, & Tyler Mathson, Alexis Mathson, Brock, Parker, & Evangeline Johnstad, Jaxton Sperling, Oaklee & Gunnar Nelson; brother, Luverne (Gloria) Mathson of Johnson Creek, WI; nieces and nephews, Anita (Greg) Domino, LuWayne (Mandy) Mathson, LuAnn (Forrest) Larson, Laurie (Tom) McDonald, Jay (Krista) Mathson; his son’s dog, Brutus “Puppy Chow” Mathson; and many other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his son, Guy; parents, John and Gertie Mathson; grandson, Tyler Mathson; and infant children, Debra, Baby Boy Mathson and Daniel.
