Darrel Janisch of Thief River Falls, MN, passed away peacefully November 19th, 2021, with his wife by his side.  He was 70 years old.

Darrel was born on February 15, 1951, in Brittan, South Dakota to his parents Leo and Dorothy (Isensee) Janisch.  Because of Leo’s construction jobs, the family moved around.  They finally made their home in Borup, Minnesota.  Darrel worked for his dad putting up grain bins for 3 or more summers.  He ran one of the crews.  Darrel graduated from high school in 1969.  He attended the University of Minnesota, Morris for one year.  He continued his education at the Thief River Falls Technical School graduating with a degree in Electrical Engineering.  Within a month of graduation, he started working for Arctic Cat where he continued to work until he retired after 46 years.

While attending University of Morris, Darrel met his wife, Jean Wieser.  The couple had three children, Aaron, Angella (Angie), and Andy.  The family continued to grow adding Michelle, Dave and Elodie and 6 grandchildren, Ethan, Rhett, Reece, Colton, Rylie, and Sophie.  Darrel loved having all of them around.  He especially loved playing with his grandchildren or teaching them new skills like driving a stick shift, changing oil on a vehicle, or rotating tires. He would drop whatever he was doing to with them.

Darrel was a man of many talents.  He built the house he lived in with the help of his father Leo.  He did ALL the work himself.  He also built many enclosed deer stands that he put up on his hunting land.  Darrel could fix anything.  If he couldn’t figure it out, he would go to the internet to find the way to do it.  He enjoyed helping his friends with whatever problems they had and what he really loved was helping his kids on any project they needed him for.  He would tell them to make lists of projects so he could keep busy.  He hated just sitting doing nothing.

Darrel was an avid hunter and fisherman.  He went on many adventures including hunting for deer, elk, mule deer, bear, wild boar, etc. in Minnesota, North Dakota, Texas, Wyoming, Montana.  Darrel also fished for walleye, northern, salmon, halibut, trout, paddlefish, etc. in Minnesota, Montana, Alaska, Michigan. Where Darrel loved hunting the most was at his hunting land by Newfolden.  He and his son Aaron put many hours developing trails, ponds, food plots, and putting up free standing tree stands that Darrel built.

Darrel was also very active in the Thief River Falls Archery Club.  Over the years, he was an officer on the board.  His goal was to have a building built just for the club which did happen at the fairgrounds.  He shot in league and many outdoor archery shoots.  He also shot many deer with his bow.

Darrel truly loved life and will be missed.

Darrel is survived by his wife Jean of 50 years, his children, Aaron (Michelle Haugen), Angella (Dave O’Brien) and Andy (Elodie Marlier) and grandchildren, Ethan, Rhett & Reece Janisch, Colton & Rylie O’Brien, and Sophie Janisch.  Brothers Jim, Vern, Rodney & David Janisch, and sister LeeAnne.
