Barbara Jean Raabe-Naumann was born on July 18, 1947 in New Ulm, MN.  She was the third of four children born to Henry L. Raabe and his wife Evelyn nee’ Arndt.  She was baptized and confirmed at Saint Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Ulm.

She attended grade school at Saint Paul Lutheran.  She was graduated from Martin Luther High School in New Ulm and from Dr. Martin Luther College in 1969.  She was assigned to teach Third Grade and upper grades Math at Saint Matthew Lutheran School in Oconomowoc, WI.

After teaching five years she was united in marriage in 1974 with Pastor Peter Naumann of Milwaukee, WI, who was serving a mission congregation in Saint Cloud, MN.  The congregation, Petra Lutheran, moved to Sauk Rapids, MN.  Their marriage was blessed with three sons, Timothy, John, and Andrew.

Barbara was active in the church serving as organist, Sunday School teacher, and choir director.  The family moved to South Dakota when Peter followed the Call to serve the dual parish of Saint Jacobi Lutheran in Glenham and Zion Lutheran in Mobridge.  The family enjoyed 32 years at the parish, as well as South Dakota life and people.

She was again very active with the music of the parish.  When the boys were all in school, Barbara was called to teach the upper grades in the church’s grade school.  She taught 20 years until 2010.  During much of this time she served as principal.  She thoroughly enjoyed mentoring, working with, and growing with the new teachers at Zion.  (The local principal called her “a natural.”)  She also represented the small Lutheran elementary schools at the district principals’ conference.

When Peter retired in December of 2015 they moved to Lafayette, MN.  This was much closer to both of their many relatives and to activities at Martin Luther College.

Barbara was diagnosed with ovarian cancer on the ides of March, 2019.  After chemo therapy and surgery that June she continued weekly treatments until May of this year when the cancer had spread and become unwise to treat.  She entered Hospice on May 19th.  She was called from this vale of tears to the side of our Savior Jesus on Monday August 1, 2022 at the age of 75 years and 14 days.

Besides her husband, Barbara is survived by her three sons: Tim of Mobridge, SD; John “Hans” and his wife Shelby and three children of Northfield, MN; and by Andrew and his wife Faith with four children in Saginaw, MI.  She is also survived by her sister Kathleen (Mrs. James Vanisacker) of Monroe, MI; her brother Willard and his wife Keturah of Greensboro, NC; and her sisters-in-law Renate Raabe and Julie Feltes of New Ulm.  Further survivors are Peter’s five brothers and three sisters-in-law; brother-in-law; and many, many cousins, nephews, and nieces.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother Henry E. “Hap” Raabe; and sisters-in-law Myrna Borgwardt and Cheryl Naumann.
