Northern Lights Express: All Aboard from Minneapolis to Duluth

ST. PAUL, MN (trfnews.i234.me & trfnews.i234.me) The proposed $1-billion Northern Lights Express would provide roundtrip train service between Minneapolis and Duluth.
uh menot has received a half million dollars from the federal government to move forward with planning on proposed the Northern Lights Express passenger rail service between Minneapolis and duth the project with a price tag around $1 billion is controversial because critics say the line operating at standard rail speeds would offer no advantage over driving Democratic senator uh Jen McAn from duth responds reestablishing passenger rail back up in duth is sort of the first priority but I think that there are many people who would love to see a faster train in May the legislature appropriated about $195 million for the project the 20% local match needed to apply for federal grants opponents warn it will be another empty train like the Northstar Commuter whale one saying quote it will end up being a very expensive way to Ferry oxygen from one part of the state to another end quote the train will not be a high SP highspeed rail uh and state senator Jan MC Yuan acknowledges that having a a real quality Dependable alternative for people who do want to travel by rail who don’t want to have to have a car if if they choose not to and maybe they just want to rent a car for a day to go up the shore and come back but they want to be in duoth uh the state legislature and may earmarked about $195 million uh the uh Northstar Commuter Rail that’s between Twin Cities and Big Lake if you’re wondering

  1. Amtrak discontinued service to Duluth in April 1985 because they couldn't make it work.

If there was customer demand, and a train could be run without losing money, a private company would step in and provide the service. This is an idiotic, waste of money.

It's concerning that our lawmakers are so stupid that they have absolutely no concept of economics or how to do math. It's like we've turned our bank account, and the responsibility of paying our monthly family bills, over to the three year old toddlers. What could possibly go wrong?

  2. This is part of the long-term plan for Minnesota. We are putting light rail from the cities to Duluth. From the cities to St. Cloud, and from the cities to Rochester. All major hubs of the cities will be connected to Mayo Clinics. This is all part of Destination Medical Center. Their website ends with a Dot MN. It's DMC then the DOT then the MN, check it out.

  3. I do not believe this is a wise use of public tax dollars!

First of all, it has failed at least three previous times.

I was quite familiar with two of the failures, the train from Minneapolis suited my supervisor for his once quarterly trips to Duluth … because he had a fee hours to finish paperwork.

But, the passenger count each time I met him the passenger count was meager.

Now, Groom offers hourly van service to and from Duluth to the Minneapolis Airport and other locations for unbeatable prices.

How about using public funding for something we really need?

  4. I will add this. This is good news for me. I moved to Duluth myself, I love the area. But my family still lives predominantly in the Cities. If the NLX is gearing to be much like the Borealis, then it's likely going to be a lot cheaper for me to take the train down to the cities for weekends than driving and paying for gas. Not to mention I'll get to relax the entire way down, enjoy the scenery of our state proper. And no more paranoia around which cops speed trap is gonna pick me off for going 3 over.
