North Georgia Mother Arrested After Son Walks to Town Alone

FANNIN COUNTY, Ga. (trfnews.i234.me) – A mother in Fannin County, Georgia, was arrested after her 10-year-old son walked alone to a gas station less than a mile from their home while she was away at a doctor’s appointment with another child.

According to a report from the Fannin County Sheriff’s Office, deputies found the child walking along Mineral Bluff Highway and Spur 60. The boy, who is homeschooled, told deputies he did not need help. Upon contacting the boy’s mother, Brittany Patterson, deputies noted she did not appear concerned. Patterson explained that she had assumed her son was playing in the woods after he failed to get in the car.

The deputies later returned with a warrant, charging Patterson with reckless conduct. Patterson was arrested, booked into jail, and released on a $500 bond. The Georgia Division of Family and Child Services was notified to check on the family.

Authorities offered to drop the charges if Patterson signed a safety agreement ensuring her children would always be supervised, but she declined and plans to fight the charges in court.
