Norman County: Halstad Man Charged with Assaulting Elderly Father and Robbery

Halstad (trfnews.i234.me) — A Halstad man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly assaulting his 79-year-old father, taking his money and car keys, and preventing him from calling 911. The incident occurred on October 3, 2025, according to a criminal complaint filed in Norman County District Court.

Jordan Richard Kjos, 43, of Hendrum, Minnesota, has been charged with felony domestic assault, witness tampering, simple robbery, and gross misdemeanor interference with a 911 call.

According to the Norman County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a residence in Halstad after receiving a report of a possible drunk driver. Upon arrival, Deputy Scott Nordquist located the suspect’s vehicle but found it unoccupied. The deputy then spoke with the reporting party — identified as Kjos’ father, referred to as R.K. in court documents — who reported that his son had passed out inside the home.

R.K. told deputies that Kjos had started drinking early that morning and later entered his bedroom, demanding car keys. Kjos allegedly wrestled with his father, pushed him to the ground, and took between $80 and $100 in cash from his pockets, along with his car keys. When R.K. attempted to call 911, Kjos reportedly grabbed the phone from his hand and told him not to call for help. R.K. said he was terrified and feared for his life, telling deputies, “I thought it might be the end of me.”

After the confrontation, Kjos allegedly left in his father’s vehicle but later returned, parked outside for a short time, reentered the apartment, drank more alcohol, and passed out. Deputies arrested him at the scene. During the search, they recovered $70 in cash from Kjos’s pockets. He was medically cleared and transported to jail.

Prosecutors note that Kjos has two prior domestic violence-related convictions within the past decade in North Dakota, which elevate the domestic assault charge to a felony.

If convicted, Kjos faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine for each of the felony counts. He remains in custody pending further court proceedings in Norman County.
