NDSU’s Sax Advances to Day Two of NCAA Championships

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – North Dakota State wrestling’s Gaven Sax advanced to day two of the 2024 NCAA Championships after rebounding from an opening round loss with a win in the first consolation round Thursday night at the T-Mobile Center.

Sax dropped his opening round match to Central Michigan’s Alex Cramer- in the Thursday morning session. After Sax re-attacked and tried to get No. 19 seed Cramer to his back, the Central Michigan wrestler was able to hold Sax’s leg and force him to his back, securing a neutral pin for the upset win over 14th seeded Sax.

In the evening session, Sax rebounded with a dominating win over No. 30 seed Myles Takats of Bucknell. After a scoreless first period and a neutral start chosen by Takats, Sax recorded a takedown straight into a four-point near fall for a 7-0 lead. He then added two more four-point nearfalls to secure the tech fall win at 4:28.

With the win, Sax advances to Friday morning’s session and will face No. 13 seed Justin McCoy of Virginia in another elimination match. Sax and McCoy met earlier this season in a dual in Fargo, with then No. 8 McCoy winning in a tight 4-3 decision.

The Friday morning session is set to begin at 11 a.m. and will be televised live on ESPNU and ESPN+
